The Crucible Blog 1: 9/14/11

At the time of the witch trials, the government of Massachusetts was a theocracy, that is a government with a legal system based upon the canons of a "state" religion. Although our constitution forbids our government to recognize any state religion, from time to time certain practices, such as displaying holiday nativity scenes on government or public property are questioned as to their constitutionality. How far do you think we should go to keep Church and State separate? Is it always harmful to reference religious beliefs within government institutions (like schools or courts), or are some people overly sensitive? Use the reading and personal experiences to support your argument.

I think it is a good idea to keep the church and state separate because a lot of people have different views on religion.

We should go as far as to make sure that the government never becomes about church all around. I think they shouldn't talk about church in school because most people aren't Christian. School is about education and not religion. The founding fathers wanted to be founded on democracy not religion.

I think religion has nothing to do with our government. We should keep them separate by not speaking of God or anything dealing with religion. Some people have different beliefs. I do not think some people are over sensitive when it comes to religion, they can believe what they want. When it comes to the law people should abide by the rules the government makes.

I don't feel that the government should try to keep the state and the church separate. There are times when referencing religious beliefs may be helpful.

Things are good the way they are now. They aren't exactly separate but they don't exactly preach to the whole state about religion. For example, Christmas is a time that almost everyone celebrates, whether they are high religious or not. People believe what they wanna believe, and if someone doesn't believe something, then let them be. It should stay out of the school though. School is a place to learn. If you wanna learn about religion, go to church or something -Jose Resendez

I think we should keep the church and the state fairly apart because we don't need any religious discrimination by the people at the state or church. Everyone should have there own opinion but it shouldn't effect peoples decisions. It is harmful to reference religious beliefs within government because people have different beliefs and it shouldn't affect a persons view on things.

I think it would be a good idea because we could learn a lot more about what we don't know much about

I believe that religion should be very separated from government. I believe this because it could get in the way of some judgment calls that could really change how things turn out. Although I don't think it should be completely separated because, some familiar commandments suggest how to behave. The way that it wants you to behave has been a major influence in laws so therefore should not be completely separated.

I think that we should keep church and the state separate because everyone isn't religious. I do think that some people are too sensitive though. We should be able to talk about it without getting in trouble but it should stay separate.

Religion has not a single thing to do with our government. If we can't preach it in schools, you should just leave it out. Some people have no religions, so they can get sensitive about bringing it up in a government view or at any stand point in life. I don't think they are over sensitive though. Religious views shouldn't be brought up in any situation. Our law says we can't bring it up into some things, so I don't think they should be able to.

I believe that church and state should be kept apart. Some would judge based on the religion and that wouldn't be fair at all. If religion is brought up in a court hearing then the defendant could be "proven guilty" but actually be innocent just because people don't agree with their religion. That would not be right.

I feel that it is ok to keep the church and state separate because no one believe in different religions. It is harmfull to make fun of people because of their religion. People should really believe in all religions instead of only one religion.

I think people get to sensitive about the way other people go about their religious beliefs. We shouldn't separate them and just let people celebrate how they want. People should have the right to display there out look on religion and if other people have a problem with it, then they just shouldn't look. Its none of their business what other people think. People need to realize that there is more than just them on this earth and we all have to compromise to make this world civil and to get along.

I think that we should keep the church separate. Because you have a right to choose your religion.
